Today October 6th was the second week of Fall Ball over at Newton South. I didn’t get to see nearly as much action as I did last week. But, here are some things that I noticed.
Again, pretty much every team that I saw had some weaknesses exploited through their younger players. It is frustrating to more experienced players having a great rally interrupted by a simple mistake by a younger player. Even though Fall Ball is not nearly as competitive as the regular season, this still was a bothersome trend. Some teams may not appear as strong as they should be. This can also be attributed to the majority of teams lacking some of their top talent.
As far as the good impressions I got, there was Braintree, who definitely looked very improved after struggling to win games all of last season. Barnstable was also great like last week. The only thing that could be misleading is that they seemed to have more of their main players than other teams. Newton North did pretty well, except that I believe they were playing with a few Milford guys. I like the way that Framingham has been playing. They might not look the flashiest, but they get the job done.
Wellesley struggled a bit today and showed with the absence of Ben Cohen that they might rely too heavily on one player. Wayland doesn’t get that much attention, and they certainly aren’t a bad team, however, they were probably placed at too high of a level for today. There was also the main Natick team, who looked very inconsistent. At first they couldn’t get much together against Needham, but bounced back very nicely against Newton South 1. Undoubtedly the game of the day was Newton South 1 against Needham. In a rematch of the South Sectional Finals, Newton South came back to win 31-29 in a thriller, which looked just as serious and competitive as a regular season match.
